چکیده

The realization that the relativistic outflow in GRBs is in the form of jets has direct implication to their energy budget and their rates. This has, in turn, further implications on the nature of the inner engine. For example prior to the understanding that GRBs are beamed, events such as GRB 990123 with an isotropic equivalent energy of more than 10 erg were hard to explain. With beaming the energy output of this even is a“mere” 10 erg and is compatible with a simple stellar mass progenitor. Evidence of jetted GRBs arises from observations [1, 2] of the predicted achromatic breaks in the afterglow light curves [3, 4]. Further support is given by the comparison of long term radio calorimetry with the energy of the prompt emission [5]. The time of the jet break provides an estimate of the jet angle [4]:

On-Axis Orphan Afterglows

On axis orphan afterglows are afterglows with no preceding γ-ray emission that arise within the initial GRB jet. This could happen if the GRB and afterglow emission are beamed differently in different wavelengths, as would be the case if the relativistic Lorentz factors varies strongly with angle within GRB jets. We show that the observations of the WFC on BeppoSAX constrain with high certainty...

Late-time Radio Observations of 68 Type Ibc Supernovae: Strong Constraints on Off-axis Gamma-ray Bursts

We present late-time radio observations of 68 local Type Ibc supernovae, including six events with broad optical absorption lines (“hypernovae”). None of these objects exhibit radio emission attributable to off-axis gamma-ray burst jets spreading into our line-of-sight. Comparison with our afterglow models reveals the following conclusions: (1) Less than ∼ 10% of Type Ibc supernovae are associa...

Late-time Radio Observations of 74 Type Ibc Supernovae: Strong Constraints on Off-axis Gamma-ray Bursts

We present late-time radio observations of 74 local Type Ibc supernovae, including six events with broad optical absorption lines (“hypernovae”). None of these objects show evidence for radio emission attributable to offaxis gamma-ray burst jets spreading into our line-of-sight. Comparison with our afterglow models reveals the following conclusions: (1) Less than ∼ 1.4% of Type Ibc supernovae a...

Constraints on Jets and Luminosity Function of Gamma-ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae

If Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are generally associated with supernovae like 1998bw, a relatively wide intrinsic luminosity function is implied, which indicates the existence of a large amount of undetected dim bursts, and a much higher event-rate than is often assumed. If it is assumed that the intrinsic luminosity function of GRBs is a power-law: φ(L) ∝ L (β > 0, Lmin ≤ L ≤ Lmax), data from the B...

Observational evidence for a correlation between peak - luminosities and beaming in GRBs

We calculate the unseen-but-true GRB-event rate from a current flux-limited sample of 33 GRBs with individually measured redshifts. We consider a GRBevent rate which is proportional to the star-formation rate, in view of the GRBSNe association in SN1998bw and GRB030329. By fitting a log-normal distribution of GRB peak-luminosities, we find a ratio 1/fr ≃ 450 for the true-to-observed GRB-event r...
